Oil filter change interval – every oil change or longer?
Changing oil every 10-12k km on my diesel Passat. Mechanic says oil filter should be swapped every time too, but I've seen people online saying it's fine to skip sometimes if the filter looks good. What's the real deal for modern cars? Any risks to skipping it occasionally?

For most modern engines, especially turbodiesels or direct injection, it's best to change the oil filter with every oil change- contaminants build up fast, and a clogged or old filter can reduce flow or let bypass valve open more often, sending unfiltered oil through. I've had bad experiences skipping it once; slight pressure drop and more sludge noticed at next service. Always replace it now. Recently got filters from https://elartcom.eu/categories/oil-filters-23 - they have a wide range sorted by car make, including OEM-style with good bypass and anti-drainback valves for VWs. Picked one that matched my engine code perfectly, quality felt solid with metal end caps. Installed with fresh oil, runs smooth and no leaks. Prices were better than dealer, delivery quick. If you're doing it yourself, check their category- makes finding the right spec easy and reliable.
