Government Officials Meet to Address Reports of Dead Fish and Discolored Waters in Lamotrek

Wednesday, June 17, 2026 /// DYCA PIO

Yap FM - On June 16, Governor Francis Itimai convened a meeting with relevant government officials, to discuss and determine an appropriate response to reports of dead fish and discolored coastal waters affecting Lamotrek and other outer islands. The situation has raised concerns among residents regarding potential impacts on food security and public health.

Government officials were first alerted to the issue on June 13, after residents observed unusual water discoloration and fish deaths around Lamotrek. Reports and photographs of the incident quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention to what residents described as sudden and alarming changes in local marine conditions.

At this time, the cause of the phenomenon remains unknown. Government agencies are working together to assess the situation, gather information, and develop an action plan to address community concerns and determine appropriate next steps.
