Three-Day Training Advances Invasive Species Awareness and Food Preservation in Yap

Yap FM - Yesterday, July 30, the FSM GCF Food Security Project shared highlights from a three-day training held at the Yap Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Conference Center from July 8–10, 2026.

The GCF SAP020 Project conducted training on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and Food Processing and Preservation for farmer group members from across Yap. Participants represented Makiy Community, Miginigad Family Group, Ifalug Female Alliance, Farmers Time Group, Minninarow Group, Tanebiyqoch Group, Luwech Women Association, Thabeth Men & Women Organization, Gardenia Research, and Thol Community.

Morning sessions focused on Invasive Alien Species (IAS), with trainers from the GEF6 Project delivering presentations and leading discussions on invasive plants and insects, their pathways of introduction, effective control methods, appropriate chemicals for eradication, and safety measures for handling invasive species.

During the afternoon sessions, participants received hands-on training in Food Processing and Preservation. They learned the requirements and protocols for conducting community-based training and demonstrated drying techniques, gaining practical experience in preparing staple crops for preservation and future use.

Through these trainings, the GCF SAP020 Project continues to strengthen local knowledge and practical skills, empowering farmer groups to adopt and share climate-resilient practices that support food security and build stronger, more resilient communities across Yap.
