Yap FM - Today, March 30, 2026, the 2nd Annual Micronesian Culture and Traditions Day officially took place on March 30, 2026, at the Yap Living History Museum, bringing together community members, students, state leadership, and off-island guests. Hosted by DYCA, the event began at 3:00 p.m. with the master of ceremony delivered by Martin L. Ruwniyol. In his speech, he welcomed distinguished guests, students, and participants, emphasizing the importance of preserving Micronesian culture and traditions for future generations. He highlighted how events like this strengthen identity, pride, and community connection across the islands.
The program opened with a prayer led by Maphrick Ruweday, followed by the Presentation of Colors, where FMI students proudly represented their schools and carried both national and state flags, symbolizing unity across the Federated States of Micronesia. The FSM National Anthem was then beautifully performed by Amber, whose performance set a respectful tone for the ceremony.
A brief historical overview about Micronesia Culture and Traditions Day was presented by Slate, who reflected on the origins and cultural significance of Micronesian traditions, reminding attendees of the deep-rooted customs that continue to shape island life today.
A welcoming remark from the Honorable Governor and a special remark from Senator Gabriel Ramoloilug on behalf of the Honorable Speaker Nicholas Figirlaarwon from the 11th Yap State Legislature. Senator Ramoloilug reinforced the importance of cultural preservation and youth involvement. Both speakers emphasized that the strength of Micronesia lies in its traditions, and encouraged younger generations to actively participate in maintaining and celebrating their heritage.
This year’s event was made possible through the generous donations given by sponsors which were the Office of the FSM President, the FSM Office of National Archives, Culture, and Historic Preservation, the Bank of FSM, Yap Fishing Authority, Department of Resources and Development, Department of Education, Yap Visitors Bureau, Yap State Public Service Corp., Leo Pugram, and the Division of Agriculture and Forestry. It was also made possible through the generous support of the Maap Community, the Gagil Community and the Fanif Community.
To close out the celebration, attendees enjoyed a lively Night Market featuring a variety of vendors. Booths offered local foods, handmade crafts, and traditional goods, giving visitors a chance to experience the richness of Micronesian culture firsthand while supporting local entrepreneurs.
