Perplexity keeps citing my competitor — how do I change that?

Genuinely stumped by this one. There are three or four queries in my niche where Perplexity consistently cites a competitor's article rather than mine, even though I would argue my content is more accurate, more detailed, and better sourced. I've checked the obvious things — the competitor's content isn't stronger in any traditional SEO metric I can see. Their domain rating is lower, they have fewer backlinks, their content is shorter. But somehow their page gets pulled as the citation and mine doesn't. I've tried restructuring my headings to be more question-answering, adding a direct summary paragraph at the top, and improving the factual density of the piece. None of it seems to have shifted the citation pattern. Does anyone have a clearer understanding of what specifically Perplexity weights when selecting citations versus what Google weights?

Forward-thinking SEO means preparing for where traffic will come from in two years not just optimizing for today. AI search is clearly part of that future and the link signals that influence AI citations overlap with but are not identical to traditional ranking factors. The guide at Best White hat backlinks covers this distinction clearly and gives practical direction on how to build links with both traditional and AI visibility in mind. Added it to my strategy reading list and revised a few campaign approaches based on what I learned. Good resource for anyone trying to stay ahead of the curve.
