Diarrheal Disease Cases Continue to Decline in Yap
Friday, October 02, 2026 /// DYCA PIO
Yap FM - As of September 25, 2026, health officials reported one new case of diarrheal illness at the Main Hospital Outpatient Department (OPD), involving a 4-month-old infant who presented with diarrhea and vomiting. A 1-year-old infant previously seen on September 23 returned with worsening symptoms and was admitted to the Main Hospital ward for further treatment.
The cumulative number of documented diarrheal cases has now reached 229.
Currently, two pediatric patients remain admitted to the Main Hospital ward following one new admission and one discharge. No outpatient hydration cases were reported. To date, there have been 13 cumulative admissions, with 11 patients discharged.
Laboratory testing has identified Rotavirus co-infections in two patients. The September 23 case was co-infected with Adenovirus F, while the September 25 case was co-infected with Clostridioides difficile. Rotavirus continues to be the predominant pathogen identified, with Sapovirus, Escherichia coli, Giardia, and Salmonella also detected.
Health officials noted that the majority of patients continue to present with co-infections involving various enteric pathogens.
Despite the continued reporting of new cases, the number of cases has declined to low single digits since mid-September. The downward trend indicates that the diarrheal disease outbreak is continuing to taper off.
Health authorities continue to monitor reported cases and provide appropriate treatment and care to patients requiring medical attention.
