Yap FM - From September 18th to September 21st, the Director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation, accompanied by key staff, traveled to Woleai to conduct community outreach and assess transportation infrastructure and services on the atoll.
During the visit, the delegation met with members of the Woleai community to provide information and engage in discussions regarding the extended airport operating hours and services available in Woleai. The outreach also provided an opportunity for the team to hear community concerns and discuss matters related to the continued operation and development of the airport.
As part of the visit, the team conducted inspections of projects and transportation facilities in Woleai. The assessment included an inspection of the airport runway and terminal facilities, with particular attention given to reports of premature erosion along the runway shoulders. The inspection was intended to assess the current condition of the runway and identify areas requiring further attention.
The team also assessed designated anchorage areas within the lagoon that had been identified by members of the community. The assessment focused on reviewing the proposed anchorage locations and determining their compliance with applicable maritime requirements, safety considerations, and established standards.
The visit reflects the Department of Public Works and Transportation’s continued efforts to monitor infrastructure conditions, engage directly with communities, and support the safe and reliable delivery of transportation services to Yap State’s outer island communities.
