Yap FM - The Public Health Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Program observed World Heart Day on Tuesday, September 29, with a community health awareness event at Yap State Hospital from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The event aimed to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including heart disease and stroke, while promoting healthy lifestyle practices and preventive measures to improve heart health.
As part of the observance, the program provided free health screenings to community members and hospital staff. Services included weight and height measurements, body mass index (BMI) calculations, blood pressure checks, blood sugar screenings, and health education. A total of 45 individuals participated in the health screenings.
The event was marked by red decorations, including balloons, while staff members wore red shirts and other red clothing in recognition of World Heart Day.
During the health education session, participants received information on the importance of preventing cardiovascular diseases through healthy lifestyle choices, including avoiding tobacco use, reducing salt intake, maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and limiting alcohol consumption.
Participants were also reminded of the importance of routine health screenings and monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as conditions such as hypertension and diabetes may develop without noticeable symptoms.
The global theme for World Heart Day 2026, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps to protect heart health and recognizing signs and symptoms that may require medical attention.
Participants whose screening results indicated a need for further evaluation were advised to visit the NCD Clinic for follow-up care, with appointments arranged as necessary.
The Public Health/NCD Program encourages individuals previously diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or other NCD-related conditions to seek regular follow-up care at the NCD Clinic.
