Yap Memorial Hospital Reports Continued Decline in Pediatric Diarrheal Cases

Yap FM - As of September 23, 2026, Yap Memorial Hospital reported three pediatric patients presenting to the Outpatient Department (OPD) with diarrheal illness. The patients included two 1-year-olds and one 15-year-old. One of the 1-year-old patients was admitted to the hospital ward for further treatment.

The cumulative number of documented diarrheal cases has now reached 228.

At present, two pediatric patients remain admitted in the Main Hospital ward. No new OPD hydration cases have been reported. Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 12 patients have been admitted, with 10 patients subsequently discharged following treatment.

Laboratory surveillance continues to identify multiple enteric pathogens among patients. Recent testing detected Adenovirus in a 1-year-old female patient who was also co-infected with Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). Rotavirus remains the predominant pathogen, while Sapovirus, E. coli, Giardia, and Salmonella have also been detected. Health authorities continue to observe co-infections involving multiple enteric pathogens among a majority of patients tested.

The latest epidemiological data indicate a continued decline in reported cases. Daily case counts have remained in the low single digits since mid-September, indicating that the outbreak is showing signs of tapering off.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage the public to maintain proper hand hygiene, safe food and water practices, and other recommended measures to prevent the spread of diarrheal diseases.
