Representatives from the Diabetes, Tobacco, Cancer, JICA, and COM-CRE Programs Conduct Health Outreach in Fais

Yap FM - On Saturday, September 26th, the Yap Comprehensive Cancer Control Program shared highlights on their recent visit to Fais to conduct a four-day health screening and promotion outreach from September 14–17, 2026, reaching 81 community members, including 46 women and 35 men. The outreach included 14 homebound patients who received health screening services.

The five-member team comprised representatives from the Diabetes, Tobacco, Cancer, JICA, and COM-CRE programs. The mission aimed to increase awareness of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), promote healthy lifestyles, and provide essential health screening services to the people of Fais.

The outreach was sponsored by the Waab Healthy Lifestyle Coalition (WHLC), a nonprofit organization that works in collaboration with the Yap NCD Program to promote healthy living and reduce the burden of NCDs in Yap State.

During the four-day mission, the team provided cardiovascular disease risk assessments, including reviews of individual and family histories of high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease. Participants also received blood pressure and blood sugar tests, along with height and weight measurements to determine their body mass index (BMI).

Additional assessments included questionnaires on tobacco and alcohol use, dietary habits and nutritional intake, with particular attention to fiber consumption and the intake of sugary drinks and foods high in salt and fat.

The Cancer Program also recognized four students who completed their second dose of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine by presenting them with tribal T-shirts. The team followed up with women who had previously undergone HPV primary screening to provide their results and inform them of their next screening appointments.

In addition, the program presented a raffle prize to a woman who had won the HPV screening raffle conducted in Fais in 2024. The team also compiled a new list of women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have not yet received HPV screening. The list will support future outreach efforts and preparations for cervical cancer screening in Fais.

Team members described the outreach as successful and productive, noting that activities began on the first day with the establishment of a screening station under the trees and invitations to community members to access the free services.

The Yap Comprehensive Cancer Control Program extended its appreciation to Fais Dispensary Health Assistants Alfonso and Barbara for their assistance and support during the outreach. The team also thanked the Fais community for participating in the screenings and welcoming the visiting health workers with an assortment of nutritious local foods.

The outreach forms part of ongoing efforts by the Yap NCD Program and its partners to strengthen community health awareness, encourage preventive care and reduce the impact of non-communicable diseases across Yap State.
