Yap Diarrheal Outbreak Shows Signs of Decline

Yap FM - As of September 23, 2026, the Yap State Department of Health Services reports that the ongoing diarrheal outbreak is showing signs of decline, with daily case counts falling to low single digits since mid-September.

A total of 228 documented cases have been reported to date. Three pediatric patients were recently seen at Main Hospital, including two 1-year-olds and one 15-year-old. One of the 1-year-old patients was admitted for further treatment.

Two pediatric patients are currently hospitalized. There have been 12 total admissions, with 10 patients discharged, and no recent outpatient hydration cases reported.

Laboratory testing continues to identify multiple enteric pathogens. Rotavirus remains the predominant pathogen, while Adenovirus, Sapovirus, E. coli, Giardia, and Salmonella have also been detected. Health officials report that many patients have had co-infections involving more than one pathogen.

The Department of Health Services continues to monitor the situation and encourages the public to maintain proper hygiene and seek medical care when necessary.
