Governor Meets with Partners on Tamil Community Wastewater Treatment Project

Yap FM - On Friday, September 4, the Governor’s Office held a courtesy meeting with representatives involved in the wastewater treatment pilot project in the Tamil community of Yap. The meeting was held in the Governor’s Conference Room and included Ohmae Jun-ichi of ECOPLUS, Professor NAKANO Kazunori of Nihon University, and representatives of the Tamil Resource Conservation Trust (TRCT).

The meeting provided an opportunity to brief the Governor on the successful development and operation of the pilot project, which uses a natural filtration method known as an “artificial wetland” to treat wastewater before it is discharged into the environment.

Professor Nakano, who has been advising on wastewater treatment efforts in Tamil since 2016, reported that the current pilot system has been operating successfully for more than a year and has achieved a wastewater treatment efficiency of more than 90 percent.

The treated water has recorded a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) level of 20 mg/L, indicating that the water meets the project’s target for safe environmental discharge.

The Governor expressed his appreciation to Professor Nakano, TRCT, and ECOPLUS for their continued efforts and commitment to improving wastewater management in the Tamil community. He also reaffirmed his support for the project and pledged to continue supporting its development in his capacity as Governor.

The pilot project represents an important step toward developing sustainable and environmentally responsible wastewater treatment solutions that can benefit communities in Yap.
