Yesterday, June 17th, the Disaster Coordination Office (DCO), Yap Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Resources and Development’s Division of Marine Resources, and the Department of Health Services (DHS) issued jointly a public advisory regarding the Water Discoloration and Fish Mortality Reports in Yap State Outer Islands.
The Disaster Coordination Office (DCO), in collaboration with the Yap Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), Division of Marine Resources, and Department of Health Services(DHS), wishes to inform the public that reports have been received regarding discolored seawater and fish mortality in several Outer Islands of Yap State namely Satawal, Fechailap, Elato, Ifalik, Lamotrek and Eaurpik.
At this time, the exact cause has not been confirmed. However, based on the visual evidence and information currently available, one possible explanation is a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB)
