Yap FM - The Resilient Communities Micronesia Workshop, held October 12–13 at iBoom, brought together participants to strengthen organizational capacity and promote collaboration in advancing ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) across the Micronesia region.
The workshop focused on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation for Reducing Community Vulnerability to Climate Change in the Northern Pacific Small Island Developing States, highlighting the importance of strengthening communities, protecting ecosystems, and improving access to climate finance.
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau face increasing climate challenges, including rising sea levels, stronger storms, and coastal erosion. Protecting natural ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds is essential to safeguarding coastlines, food security, and community livelihoods.
The Resilient Communities Micronesia program supports locally led ecosystem-based adaptation by providing local organizations and communities with access to climate financing through country-based small grant programs. The initiative also strengthens organizational capacity and encourages regional knowledge-sharing to help communities develop sustainable, locally driven climate solutions.
During the two-day workshop, participants explored the program’s components and its role in broader regional climate adaptation efforts. Activities included organizational capacity assessments covering administrative, financial, and technical requirements; identifying appropriate funding tiers; reviewing eligible ecosystem-based adaptation activities; and practicing the preparation of Expressions of Interest for potential funding.
Participants also had opportunities to develop action plans, provide feedback on program tools, and identify ways to strengthen regional networking and collaboration.
Through these efforts, the Resilient Communities Micronesia program aims to empower local organizations, build community resilience, and support nature-based solutions that protect both people and ecosystems throughout the Northern Pacific.
The workshop underscores the importance of combining traditional knowledge, climate science, and accessible funding opportunities to help Micronesian communities respond to climate change and build a more resilient future.
