Yap FM - This past Wednesday, May 27th, the FSM Fisheries and Maritime Institute held a 2-day Training and Preventive Maintenance Program for the Rescue Boat/Life Boat Davits System and the MV Hokuto at the Yap Fishing Authority Dock.
The objective of the Training and Preventive Maintenance Program is to ensure the safe operation, reliability, and compliance of the davit system for the rescue boat/lifeboat and Hokuto through planned cadet training, inspection, testing, servicing, and preventive maintenance activities.
The scope of work for the Davit System included Visual inspection of davit structure and foundations, Inspection of winches, sheaves, wires, and hooks, Lubrication of moving parts, Hydraulic and electrical system checks, Functional testing of lowering and hoisting operations, Emergency release mechanism testing, Brake testing and adjustment, Wire rope condition assessment, Safety interlock verification, Load test preparation (if required) and Documentation and maintenance recording.
The scope of work for the Hokuto also included General hull inspection and cleaning, Engine inspection and servicing, Battery and electrical system inspection, Steering and control checks
Bilge and drainage inspection, Safety equipment verification, Communication equipment testing, and Cleaning and preservation work.
These particular work scopes familiarized the cadets with the safe operation of davits, launching and recovery procedures, emergency operation procedures, routine inspection requirements, preventive maintenance practices, and troubleshooting and reporting procedures.
