Yap FM - This past Thursday, March 5th, the President of the Federated States of Micronesia, His Excellency, Wesley W. Simina, issued a presidential proclamation for March 8, 2026, as International Women’s Day “KIEKI: Weaving Strength, Unity, and Progress for a Resilient FSM.”
Whereas the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) recognizes that women are agents of change who play a critical role in the development, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth of our nation.
The 10th Federated States of Micronesia Women’s Conference, held in 2025, reaffirmed our national commitment to dismantling systemic barriers, challenging social norms, and ensuring the active participation of women in all levels of decision-making.
The women in the Federated States of Micronesia are not only the backbone of our communities and families, but are also increasingly leading in education, business, and governance across all four states.
March 8, 2026, coincides with the global call to address the intersecting challenges of climate change, economic inequality, and the need for enhanced, sustainable livelihoods, with a special focus on empowering women farmers and entrepreneurs.
Therefore, the Federated States of Micronesia continues to prioritize the health, safety, and rights of women, including the implementation of policies aimed at eliminating gender-based violence and ensuring paid maternity leave.
His Excellency, Wesley W. Simina, stated that “ on this day, we honor the wisdom of our traditional leaders and the resilience of our women, embodying the spirit of “Kieki”- a woven mat- where our individual strengthens are joined together to create a stronger, more united nation.”
