U.S. Department of Defense Plans Environmental Study for Yap Airport and Seaport ImprovementsMonday, July 07, 2025, /// DYCA PIO

Yap, FM - The U.S. The Department of Defense (DoD), through Joint Task Force Micronesia, is planning to study how future construction and upgrades at the Yap International Airport and the Yap Seaport could affect the environment.

This study, called an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), will look at the possible environmental effects of improving these important transportation sites in Yap State, (FSM). The DoD is working with the FSM and Yap State governments, along with airport and seaport officials.

These upgrades are part of a larger agreement between the U.S. and FSM, known as the Compact of Free Association (COFA). 

The goal of the proposed upgrades at Yap Airport is to strengthen the ability of the U.S. Air Force and Navy to maintain a forward presence, respond to emergencies, and stay mission-ready in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). 

For the seaport, the purpose is to improve port facilities to support both civilian and military use, including occasional docking of U.S. and allied ships, in line with U.S. defense responsibilities under the Compact of Free Association (COFA).

These limitations reduce the U.S. military's ability to meet its defense commitments under COFA and carry out missions in the Indo-Pacific region. With these improvements, the airport will have improved FAA safety standards, support for military, humanitarian, and emergency operations.

Additionally, A meetings were held earlier today, July 7, 2025, in coordination with the Yap State Task Force in the U.S. Military and Government Operations, as outlined in the Operational Control Letter.
