Yap, FM – A community Walk-a-trash-a-thon was held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Yap Living History Museum. The event aimed to promote public health awareness and environmental responsibility. It was a joint effort by the Behavioral Health & Wellness Program (BH&WP), the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program, the Tobacco Program, and the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program. The walkathon poster highlighted the main goals of the event, which included promoting healthy behaviors, encouraging proper sanitation, raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, and supporting infection prevention practices.
The program began at 6:30 AM with opening remarks from the emcee, who acknowledged the contributions of sponsors and partners and gave a brief overview of the walkathon’s objectives and accomplishments. Guest speakers shared key messages on mental health, hygiene, tobacco prevention, and infection control. At 7:00 AM, participants began a walk around the lagoon, with vital sign checks conducted by health staff at the FSM station. After returning, participants cooled down and were offered a light breakfast of sandwiches. At 8:30 AM, awards were presented to winners of the poem, essay, and drawing competitions, followed by the announcement of raffle prize winners.
The event ended with closing remarks and a formal thank you to all volunteers, sponsors, and participants for their involvement and support.
