Yap Health Officials Monitor Increase in Diarrheal Illness

Yap FM - On September 7th, the Yap State Department of Health issued a report on the increase in diarrheal illness reported across mainland Yap and the Outer Islands.
Health alerts received on August 31 marked the second consecutive week of increased diarrheal activity. Initial clusters were reported in Ifalik and Elato, while on mainland Yap, the highest number of cases was reported in Rull, followed by Tomil and Weloy.
The Main Hospital also recorded an unusual increase in diarrheal cases, with approximately 80 percent involving children. Reported symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and nausea.
Laboratory testing has identified several enteric pathogens, including Rotavirus, Sapovirus, E. coli, Giardia lamblia, and Salmonella, with some patients showing co-infections.
The Department of Health is strengthening surveillance, encouraging preventive health measures, and considering more frequent water-quality testing to help ensure safe drinking water. The situation remains under investigation, with further updates expected as additional information becomes available.
