Yap Officials Explore New Internship Opportunities Through UOG Outreach

Yap FM -  Yesterday, September 16th, Officials from the Department of Resources and Development’s Workforce Enrichment Division shared highlights on their recent outreach mission to Guam, focusing on strengthening partnerships with the University of Guam (UOG) and expanding opportunities for Yapese students.

The mission, held from September 9–12, 2026, included meetings with Dr. Sharleen Santos-Bamba, UOG Senior Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs, and Mr. Harley Edeluchel, Professional Workforce Specialist. Discussions centered on developing structured internship pathways that could allow Yapese students to gain practical work experience in Yap during their academic breaks.

UOG leadership expressed strong support for exploring the internship initiative, which could help students meet academic internship requirements while gaining valuable experience in their home community.

The delegation also met with members of the UOG Yap Student Organization (YSO) at the Student Center. Officials checked in with students, provided updates on Spring 2027 application deadlines, and introduced new Loan/Scholarship Program guidelines.

The discussions also followed up on student concerns raised during previous meetings regarding graduation internship requirements. Officials shared progress on efforts to create internship opportunities in Yap in coordination with UOG and local employers.

UOG instructor Ms. Elizabeth M. Rutun, Dr. Santos-Bamba, Mr. Edeluchel, and members of the YSO supported the mission and helped coordinate the visit.

After returning to Yap, Workforce Enrichment Division officials have begun working to formalize partnerships between UOG and prospective local employers.

The initiative is expected to strengthen connections between education and workforce development while creating more opportunities for Yapese students to gain practical experience in their home community.
