Today, May 07, 2025. A meeting was held at the Governors Conference room with the U.S. Military representatives to talk about two ongoing local projects.
People at the meeting included:
Acting Governor, Thomas G. Tun
Alex Gilifley, Director of Youth and Civic Affairs
Viliame Lagonilakeba, Attorney General
Sharan, Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency
Joe Giltug, Director of Public Works and Transportation
Bernard Gorong, Director of Resources and Development
The group discussed the work being done with a dilapidated ship called Micro Spirit. This ship is being taken apart into smaller pieces and moved to an area assigned by the state for disposal. It takes about 3 and a half hours to get to the disposal area.
They also talked about a barge that is being repaired near the small business.
The U.S. Navy representatives asked for help to excavate the barge. They said both the removal of the vessels and the repair work are set to be done by mid-June.
The Director of Youth and Civic Affairs inquired if this operation can also include the barge adjacent to the micro spirit at Nungoch, along with all the cars on the entire island. The Navy personnel responded that the request from the DYCA Director is not part of this contract but can be considered if request is made.
The Acting Governor also mentioned that if the U.S. Military wants to change the assigned disposal location so that an official note has to be sent through the proper channel for consideration.
There has been misinformation about the actual location where the micro spirit is being disposed of. Sea Transportation is actively monitoring the situation to ensure everything is proceeding according to plan. A specific route is being followed for this process.
