Yap State Reports 220 Cumulative Diarrheal Cases

Yap FM - The Yap State Department of Health reports that a total of 220 diarrhea cases have been recorded since the beginning of the current diarrheal disease outbreak.

During the latest reporting period, from September 18 through September 20, 2026, health authorities recorded five new diarrhea cases.

One new pediatric patient was admitted during the reporting period and is currently the only diarrhea patient hospitalized in the ward. No patients are currently receiving hydration treatment through the outpatient department (OPD).

Of the five new cases reported during the period, two underwent laboratory testing. Both tested positive for Rotavirus with concurrent E. coli infection.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, there have been 11 total hospital admissions, including nine pediatric admissions. To date, 10 patients have been discharged.

Laboratory testing conducted during the outbreak has identified several pathogens among patients, including Rotavirus, Sapovirus, E. coli, Giardia, and Salmonella. In some cases, more than one pathogen was detected.

The Yap State Department of Health continues to monitor reported diarrhea cases, conduct laboratory testing as indicated, and provide appropriate clinical care to patients. Health authorities continue to encourage the community to practice good hand hygiene, use safe drinking water, and seek medical attention when diarrhea is severe or accompanied by signs of dehydration.
