Yap State Disaster Coordinating Officer Issues Public Advisory on Regional Smoke and Haze Affecting Yap
Wednesday, October 14, 2026 /// DYCA PIO
Yap FM - The Yap State Disaster Coordinating Officer issued a public awareness advisory yesterday, October 13th, regarding regional smoke and haze affecting Yap Main Island, urging residents to take precautionary measures to protect their health as air quality and visibility continue to be affected.
According to the advisory, severe and widespread dry conditions across the region, associated with a strong El Niño pattern, have contributed to wildfires and agricultural fires in parts of Indonesia, particularly Sumatra and Borneo, as well as Papua New Guinea. These fires have produced smoke that is traveling across the region.
Persistent weather patterns and prevailing winds are carrying smoke and haze across the Western Pacific toward Yap. The advisory noted that reduced visibility and deteriorating air quality have been observed on Yap since September, with haze becoming increasingly dense in early October.
In response to these conditions, residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities, particularly when haze is heavy, and to keep doors and windows closed to minimize smoke entering their homes. Those who must remain outdoors for extended periods are encouraged to wear a well-fitting protective mask, preferably an N95 or equivalent respirator, to reduce exposure to fine smoke particles.
Residents are also encouraged to minimize outdoor exposure during periods of heavy haze and remain informed through official announcements regarding air quality conditions and further public health guidance.
Children, older adults, and individuals with asthma or other heart and lung conditions are urged to take extra precautions due to their increased vulnerability to poor air quality. Anyone experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, or other severe symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as regional smoke and haze conditions continue to affect Yap Main Island.
